History

Resurrection Community Church was founded in 1903 as the First Baptist Church of Glenside. They worshipped in a building (now demolished) at Easton Road and Wesley Avenue (currently Hibbert's Pest Control).

In 1922(?), a group of members left to form Wharton Avenue Baptist Church (which subsequently merged with Ardsley Community Chapel to become today's Glenside Bible Church on Keswick Avenue.) In 1928, First Baptist Church built and moved to the building at our present site. Despite the market crash of 1929 one year after the building's construction, the congregation still paid off the mortgage early.

The church continued to grow and thus the adjoining classroom building was added in 1959. That decade was the high-water mark in terms of church membership; the sanctuary ground floor and balcony were packed each Sunday. Sadly, from the 1970's through the 1990's, the church grew smaller and smaller. By mid-2002, attendance at worship services averaged less than 25 people. In July of 2002, the Church Board felt compelled to recommend that First Baptist close its doors. Instead, it was determined that such a decision would be postponed. The parsonage next door was sold in order to pay the bills, and the congregation waited upon the Lord, praying that his plans for this struggling congregation were not yet finished.

In 2005, as part of a broader renewal movement embraced by the congregation, we changed our name to Resurrection Community Church (RCC). Today the church is a small but growing and vibrant fellowship. An increase in the number of young adults and their energy in leadership has been integral to this rebirth. Our current pastor David Huizenga began his pastoral ministry here in 2002 and was officially installed in 2003.

The church was founded in the American Baptist denomination (ABC) with membership in the Philadelphia Baptist Association (PBA). RCC's association with these institutions has been changing in the past few years as our membership increasingly spans an ecumenical gamut of evangelical Christianity, and as we emphasize a commitment to historic biblical orthodoxy. At present, RCC is still formally affiliated with the ABC and PBA.
